About the Artist: Erin’s passion for nature is expressed through her photography, jewelry and artwork. Her creations are translations of the magnificence and beauty that she sees in nature, and range from photography and jewelry, to hanging mobiles and beyond. She is full of new inspirations and ideas everyday, so there is no limit to what her imagination will create next.
Erin discovered the world through a camera lens while in her teens. As a student in environmental studies at UC Santa Cruz, she was able to enhance her natural abilities with photography classes and discovered the art of black and white photography while working in the university dark room. Whether she is photographing with digital or film, she prefers to create with her camera and capture nature as she sees it, rather than use digital enhancement or manipulation. Her photographs capture her perception of nature at that particular moment. Erin’s eye for texture, color, light and composition is demonstrated in the simplicity of a fern leaf with a rain drop, the colorful reflection of a hibiscus flower floating on water to the majesty of soaring trees captured in black and white.
Her jewelry and shell creations also reflect her appreciation of the color and texture of natural materials. She collects and hand picks all the seeds and shells used in her creations, and she is inspired by the colors in natural gemstones. All of her gemstone and shell creations are one of a kind and inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of the materials at hand.
“At an early age, I was taught to explore, touch, smell, listen, but to also be very respectful of nature. My summers were filled with camping, hiking, and road trips throughout the US, stopping at every cultural, historical, and ecological informational center. I always had a very active imagination, which was nurtured and encouraged through art, dance, music, and exploring the outdoors. I am very grateful for all of these experiences, as they have shaped my view of the world into one of appreciation for each and every thing’s uniqueness and beauty. I have lived on the Big Island for half of my life now, and taking in the raw beauty of this island is an everyday blessing for me. I find myself constantly enchanted by the wind blowing through the trees, the lap of a wave, the way the sunlight lights up the mountain.”
About Pualilia Creations: "Pualilia" (pronounced Poo-ah-lee-lee-ah) is Hawaiian for Lily flower, and is Erin's middle name and the name she signs her artwork with. In 2000, Erin began selling jewelry and photo cards under the name Pualilia Creations. The response was so encouraging that Erin built a website and small business based on Pualilia's creations, and continues to create new ideas and creations to share with others. Thanks for visiting, Malama and Aloha..
